White Perch in Missisquoi Bay

White Perch became established in the Missisquoi Bay area of Lake Champlain in the 1990's. These fish are known to feed on zooplankton. After the White Perch settlement in Missisquoi Bay that area of the lake has been experiencing larger then normal cyanobacteria blooms. It was found in 2005 that the invasive White Perch prefer to feed on the Daphnia taxa of zooplankton over other taxa. This interaction between a native (Daphnia) and invasive (White Perch) species was found to be a large contributor to the outbreaks of cyanobacteria blooms.
