Ways of invasive species prevention and control

Zebra Mussels- being very hard to remove from the Lake, stopping the spread of them throughout the Lake is monitored by the Lake Champlain Basin Program. They collect data on where the mussels have been and where they are spreading to: http://www.anr.state.vt.us/dec/waterq/lakes/htm/lp_lczebramon.htm

Water Chestnut: Hand pulling and mechanical harvesting are the best ways to control their spread.

Purple Loosestrife: Originally native to Europe, the Purple Loosestrife was introduced to the Lake Champlain wetlands and has taken over due to lack of predators and abundant resources.  One of the best ways of mitigation, instead of pesticides and hand pulling, was the introduction of its predator in Europe, the leaf-eating beetle (Galerucella spp.).  This is a form of prevention is called biological control, when the plant's native enemy is used to keep it in check. This has helped facilitate a decline in the species which has been quite effective.
